Canada defeat Germany in their second match of the 2019 Rugby World Cup repechage with a dominate 29-10 win on Saturday in Marseille, France.
A passionate battle, Canada came out on top with an impressive offensive effort early in the first half. After Gordon McRorie got Canada on the board for 3, Lucas Rumble dotted down for a try in the 22nd minute of play.
With a TMO decision in favour of Germany, the teams left the field at the half 10-7 for Canada. Canada held 69% possession at the half, controlling the pace of the game.
Using their momentum from the first half, Canada came out to a quick start in the second with Tyler Ardron smashing through the line to score. Off a break from a Canadian penalty, Germany narrowed the gap with a try, bringing the score to 17-10 after 48 minutes of play.
Canada pushed on with Matt Evans and McRorie both touching down for tries, securing the win with a 29-10 victory.
Canada’s forwards battled hard against a strong German defense, with 9:38 of play spent inside the German 22. With tensions high, Germany also racked up 11 penalties giving Canada momentum for their offensive drives.
“It was incredibly difficult, we knew they were going to be strong and we knew they were going to be a big physical side so we really prepared for that,” said Captain Phil Mack.
“I’m so proud of the way the boys hung together and stuck it out. Really happy to get a game like that in and we still have one more. So again, just like last week we have to reflect on this, carry on, and then you know, hopefully get a trip to the World Cup.”
Canada will face Hong Kong next week in their final match of the tournament. With Rugby World Cup qualification on the line, Canada will try to do all they can to defeat Hong Kong and secure their spot.
